Hebei, Guangdong launch new coal marine expressway

A new marine express line for coal transportation to southeast China's Guangdong province was launched at Qinhuangdao port in northern China's Hebei province on 19 April, marking a new initiative to ensure safe, efficient and green transportation of coal for power generation.

The express line, a collaborative effort between the maritime authorities of Hebei and Guangdong, aims to streamline the coal supply chain connecting the major coal-producing regions in the north and the power-consuming areas in the south.

It spans port clusters along Bohai Rim, the Yangtze Delta and the Pearl Delta regions, featuring long voyage, large transport capacity, and complex traffic conditions.

The initiative involves the Hebei Port Group, Guangdong Energy Group, China COSCO Shipping, and other key players in the industry. As per the signed agreement, the parties will work together to create a "high-speed expressway" for coal transportation from the north to the south, ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of the crucial energy resource.

"As a key hub in the national energy transportation network, the Hebei Port Group is committed to safeguarding the security of energy transportation," said Cao Ziyu, party secretary and chairman of Hebei Port Group.

Guangdong, a prosperous economic powerhouse, relies heavily on coal-fired power generation, with over 30 power plant terminals and 87 berths along its coast.

In 2023, the province received nearly 1 billion tonnes (bnt) of coal from Hebei, accounting for 42.7% of its total power coal consumption.
