Brazilian mining giant Vale reported a fire incident of its cargo train at Carajas Railway in northeastern state of Maranhao in the early hours of November 8 local time. But the miner expected no impact on its quarterly production, according to a company release on the same day.
The fire has been extinguished without fatalities and substantial environmental damage, though an assessment is still underway at the scene to determine the cause of the incident, the release noted.
Also, Vale intends to resume railway services in the coming days. And the miner's official website notice shows that Carajas Railway Passenger Train is scheduled to return on November 13.
The 972-kilometer Carajas railroad that carries iron ore, pig iron, manganese, copper, fuels and coal, stretches from the Mines of Carajas in forest to the Maritime Terminal of Ponta da Madeira.
In the past quarter, Vale produced 86.2 million tonnes of iron ore fines, with the volume rising by 9.5% on quarter but still being 3.9% lower than in Q3 2022, as Mysteel Global reported. Despite this, the miner had maintained its annual guidance for iron ore output unchanged at 310-320 million tonnes in 2023.
