Total imported scrap arrival at Indian ports in April rose by 1% to 506,891 tonnes (t) compared to 502,427 t seen in the same period in March, as per revised vessel line-up data maintained with SteelMint.
Region-wise scrap arrivals
West: The western region received 202,798 t of scrap in April, which was 31% higher than March's 154,895 t.
Mundra, Nhava Sheva, and Kandla ports received the major chunk of 71 % of total arrivals in April. Among buyers, JSW Minerals received the largest quantity in the western region at 34,930 t in April followed by SMW Ispat and HAQ Steels, which received 14,968 t and 11,140t, respectively.
North: The northern region received 184,740 t of scrap in April, which was 19% less than 228,844 t in March.
Chawapayal ICD, Kilarpur ICD, and Ludhiana ICD received the major chunk of 61% of total arrivals in April. Among the buyers, Amba Shakti Group and Jaideep Ispat remained the top importers with 24,529 t and 12,335 t respectively.
South: The southern region received 94,991 t of scrap in April which fell by just 1% from 95,948 t during March.
Chennai Port accounted for 84% of total scrap arrivals in the southern region till 30 April at 80,013 t.
J R Metal and Prakash Ferrous continued to be the top recipients in the southern region.
East: In the eastern region, scrap arrivals were lower compared to other regions of the country. Total scrap arrivals stood at 24,363 t in April, out of which Jajpur ICD received 15,838 t and 5,433 t was received at Kolkata Port in April.
Jindal Stainless received around 17,766 t.
Grade-wise scrap arrivals
The major chunk of imports was HMS grade, with total volumes assessed at 306,662 t in April, which was 60% of the total volume.
Total MS shredded grade received was 49,021 t followed by LMS grade at 49,001 t till 30 April.
