Colombia: Coal Exports Down 14% Y-o-Y in CY19

Colombian coal exports have dropped for the second successive year during CY19, owing to lower production and weaker market conditions.

Data provided by Colombian customs showed that the country had exported 75.67 MnT coal in CY19, which was assessed 14% lower on the year from 87.88 MnT in CY18.

Coal production at the country's largest coal producing mine-Cerrejon, which contributes roughly a third of total coal supply, was impacted by adverse weather, dust emissions control requirements during CY19 as reported by all three of its stakeholders-BHP, Anglo American and Glencore.

Anglo American having one-third shareholding in Cerrejon, stated that price realization for exports from the mine was down 33% Y-o-Y to USD 56/MT in CY19 as against USD 83/MT in CY18, while highlighting the subdued demand for Colombian coal in the global market.

A grade-wise break-up indicates that export of non-coking coal, having a lion's share of 92% in total volume, had slumped to its lowest total since CY15 (the period from which CoalMint has started tracking data for Colombian coal exports).

Exports of non-coking coal decreased 15% Y-o-Y to 69.56 MnT in CY19 compared with 81.73 MnT in CY18. Coking coal shipments fell 3% Y-o-Y to 1.82 MnT during the year.

Major Coal Importers:

Turkey remained the largest coal buyer, however, the progressive rise in intake was ended with a hefty decline recorded during CY19. The country's import from Colombia decreased 16% Y-o-Y to 17.29 MnT coal in CY19 compared with 20.48 MnT noted in CY18.

Coal taken by Chile was down 2% Y-o-Y to 7.82 MnT in CY19. Coal receipt by the third-largest importer-Brazil, fell 19% Y-o-Y to 5.35 MnT in CY19.

Sharp fall in coal shipments delivered to Europe was led by Netherlands, whose imports assessed at 4.73 MnT during CY19 have nearly fallen 64% from the levels attained during CY15.
