China's Iron Ore & Pellet Imports Climb 19% in Jan'18 - Customs

World's largest consumer of iron ore, China has imported 100.32 MnT iron ore & pellets in Jan'18, according to Customs data maintained with SteelMint. Chinese iron ore (including pellets) imports in Jan'18 witnessed an increase of 19% M-o-M as against 84.09 MnT in Dec'17. However, China iron ore imports increased by 7% Y-o-Y as against 93.81 MnT in Jan'17.
Owing to restocking activities to offset demand during New year holidays which continued from 15th Feb- 21st Feb, resulted in increased imports.
Agglomerated iron ore (pellets and concentrate) imports witnessed increase of 37% in Jan'18 to 2.24 MnT as against 1.64 MnT in Dec'17. The Y-o-Y imports recorded an increase of 11% in Jan'18 as against 2.01 MnT in Jan'17.
Non-agglomerated iron ore (lumps & fines) imports increased by 19% M-o-M to 98.08 MnT in Jan'18 compared to Dec'17 which stood at 82.45 MnT. The Y-o-Y imports depicted a rise of 7% in Jan'18 as compared to 91.8 MnT in Jan'17.
Australia iron ore exports to China up 24% M-o-M
Australia iron ore exports to China were registered at 64.54 MnT in Jan'18 (up 24% M-o-M), with 64% share of total Chinese iron ore imports. Brazil, the second-largest iron ore exporter to China, has recorded exports of 19.61 MnT down marginally as against 20.74 MnT in Dec'17, followed by South Africa at 4.61 MnT and Iran at 2.04 MnT. India exported 1.72 MnT in Jan'18, up 34% M-o-M.
