China: Aluminium imports, exports up m-o-m in Nov'22

China's imports of aluminium were recorded at 12.37 million tonnes (mnt) in November 2022 against 9.57 mnt in October, up by 29% m-o-m. The m-o-m export volume of China stood at 541,113 t in November 2022, largely stable with a slight increase of around 1% as compared to October 2022's around 538,011 t.

The import volume of ore/concentrates increased by 30% to 11.99 mnt, semi-finished products by 29% to 0.22 t, and finished products, by 34% to 39,154 t. Aluminium scrap imports fell by 16% to 0.13 t in November 2022 m-o-m.

The overall import quantity in November 2022 was up by 48% on a y-o-y basis from 8.38 mnt in November 2021.

Country-wise imports

• Exports from Guinea increase m-o-m: Export volumes stood at 7.28 mnt in November, with an increase of 65% from 4.41 mnt in October. On a y-o-y basis, export volumes also increased by 128% from 3.20 mnt in November 2021.
  
  
• Exports from Australia down m-o-m: Australia's export volumes fell to 2.92 mnt in November as against 3.44 mnt in the previous month, down by 15% m-o-m. Shipments increased by 7% from 2.73 mnt in the same period last year.
  
  
• Exports from Indonesia increase m-o-m: Exports from Indonesia to China were up by 28% to 1.45 mnt in November m-o-m from 1.13 mnt in October. The y-o-y volumes fell by 21% from 1.83 mnt in October 2021.
  
  

China's export overview

The exports of aluminium ores/concentrates from China stood at 85,456 t in November 2022, an increase of 46% from 58,675 t in October. Semi-finished products were up by 15% to 21,796 t. But finished products fell by 6% to 433,803 t followed by scrap which was down by 90% from 605 t in October 2022 to 57 t in November 2022 m-o-m.

The country's aluminium exports were slightly up by 5% y-o-y to 541,113 t in November 2022 as compared to the previous year.

    Imports to Mexico decrease m-o-m: The export volume from China stood at 45,036 t in November 2022, a decrease of 15% m-o-m as against 52,774 t in October 2022. On a y-o-y basis, export volumes were up by 10% from 40,942 t in November 2021.
    
    
  • Imports to Vietnam rise m-o-m: China's export to Vietnam were at 32,649 t in November 2022, a rise of 12% from 29,119 t in October 2022. There was an increase of 19% on a y-o-y basis from 27,419 t in November 2021 as compared to November 2022.
    
    
  • Imports to South Korea down m-o-m: Export volumes from China to South Korea were at 28,442 t, down by 10% in November 2022 as compared to around 31,628 t in October 2022. The y-o-y volume stood at 30,762 t in November 2021, a fall of 8% compared to 2022.
