China stood the largest importer of iron ore at 2.2 MnT, up 18% as against 1.87 MnT in Q1 CY19. Japan stood second largest importer at 1.71 MnT, up 30% Q-o-Q followed by France at 1.58 MnT and Netherland at 1.14 MnT.
Canada coal exports up Q-o-Q
Canadian coal exports have noted a steady growth during the second quarter of CY19, following an uptick in demand from India and China. Data provided by Canadian customs indicate that exports had increased 4% Q-o-Q to 8.97 MnT during Q2 CY19 (Apr-Jun'19), which was also 3% higher on the year from 8.74 MnT noted in the same period last year.
During the second quarter period, India emerged as the largest coal buyer from Canada, with imports rising 46% Q-o-Q to 1.74 MnT. This was in line with Indian steel mills increasingly diversifying their import source-as an alternative to the Australian market. Besides, Canadian demand for exports was driven by a significant ramp up in shipments to China, which had surged 61% Q-o-Q to 1.42 MnT in Q2 CY19.
Canadian scrap exports fell 3% in Q2 CY19
Canada exported 958,829 MT of ferrous scrap in Q2 CY'19, dropping by 3% Q-o-Q against 1,704,895 MT in Q1 CY'19. On yearly premises, imports dropped 11% Y-o-Y as against 992,728 MT ferrous scrap in Q2 CY'18. On a monthly basis, exports rose by 28% M-o-M, with 378,283 MT scrap recorded in June'19, as against 295,891 MT in May'19
USA remained the largest importer, occupying a share of 75% in total scrap imported from Canada in Q2 CY'19, as it imported 726,502 MT in the quarter, witnessing a drop of 1% Q-o-Q against 735,914 MT imported in Q1 CY'19. Followed by other importers, Egypt with 51,296 MT in Q2 CY'19, down 3% Q-o-Q and India (45,662 MT, up 70% Q-o-Q) with 5% of share each.
