Bangladesh Ferrous Scrap Imports Likely to Cross 3 MnT in 2020 : BSRM

Rising steel capacities will escalate ferrous scrap import volumes to Bangladesh in the coming years, said Mr Aameir Alihussian, BSRM.

Addressing at the 5th MRAI International Indian Metal Recycling Conference, Mr Aameir Alihussain, MD of Bangladesh Steel Re-Rolling Mills (BSRM) shared that Bangladesh ferrous scrap imports are likely to cross 3 MnT in 2020 and figures are expected to cross 5 MnT mark by 2022.

Rising steel capacities and increased dependence on secondary steel production will further push ferrous scrap imports to the country, he shared.

However port congestion, logistics issue, rains continue to remain a matter of concern, he added further.

During Jan-Sept'17, Bangladesh imported total 12,69,777 MT ferrous scrap out of which 45% (563,657 MT) share was occupied by bulk imports while remaining 55% (706,120 MT) volumes were imported in containers. During CY16, Bangladesh imported total 17,07,686 MT ferrous scrap with around 140% Y-o-Y hike against total 714,105 MT ferrous scrap imports in CY15.

BSRM (Bangladesh Steel Re-rolling mill) has so far remained the largest ferrous scrap importer followed by Abul Khair Steel Melting Ltd.

The conference has observed presence of Shri Chaudhary Birender Singh (Union Minister of Steel), Dr VK Saraswat (Member, NITI Ayog) apart from scrap importers, processors, smelters, ship breakers etc.

MRAI is conducting its 5th International Indian Metals Recycling Conference on (17) 18, 19 January, 2018 in Goa. The conference is being held with a motive to deliver comprehensive market driven information on metal recycling in India and focus on various aspects of Scrap Trade (Ferrous & Non-Ferrous) in India.
