Bangladesh Bulk Steel Import: Oct'19

According to bulk vessel line up data compiled with SteelMint, Bangladesh has observed an increase in bulk imports of ferrous scrap & coal, while import of HRC fall in Oct'19. Meanwhile, single vessel for pig iron was reported in the month as agianst nil volume in Sept'19.

Ferrous scrap: The country's bulk ferrous scrap imports up by 19% M-o-M. A total of 6 bulk vessels arrived at birth in Oct'19. Total bulk scrap imports in the month stood at 138,346 MT as against 116,412 MT scrap reported a month ago by Bangladesh. On yearly premises, the import witnessed a sharp increase of 57% Y-o-Y, as against 88,178 MT in Oct'19.

Largest supplier United States supplied 2 vessels carrying 58,000 MT (42% share) of bulk ferrous scrap in Oct'19. Followed by other prominent suppliers - Japan with 3 vessels carrying 48,346 MT (35% share) and UK with 1 vessel carrying 32,000 MT (23% share). Another 68,200 MT steel scrap is expected at Chittagong port, likely arrive at berth in Nov'19.

Coal: In Oct'19, Bangladesh coal imports witnessed the highest ever recorded volume since 2016. As per vessel line-up data maintained with SteelMint, coal imports increased by 148 % M-o-M to 1,061,867 as against 428,585 MT in Sep'19. Indonesia remained the major coal exporter to Bangladesh with 13 vessels carrying 624,690 MT scrap (59 % share) bulk coal in Oct'19.

Pig Iron: The bulk imports of pig iron to Bangladesh for Oct'19 recorded at 29,210 MT in the month, as against nil volume reported in Sept'19. On a yearly basis too, the bulk imports showed the same growth, as the same stood at nil volume Oct'18. All bulk shipments of Pig Iron for the month were recorded from India.

Steel Coils: Bulk imports of steel coils witnessed fall in Oct'19 as the country imported 97,463 MT, decreasing by 8% M-o-M as against 105,849 MT imported in Sept'19. Japan & Taiwan were the suppliers to Bangladesh of steel coils in Oct'19. On a yearly basis, HRC import up by 25% Y-o-Y in as against 77,873 MT imported a year ago during the same period.
