Bangladesh: Bulk Scrap Import Up by 115% M-o-M in Apr'20

Bangladesh's bulk ferrous scrap imports increased significantly by 115% on a monthly basis in April'20, as during late Jan to Feb'20 the imported scrap bookings started to pick up as offers to Bangladesh were quite favorable during late Jan to Feb'20 due to favorable price level. The country imported a total of 255,659 MT of scrap in Apr'20 as against 118,998 MT imported in Mar'20, as per vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint.

On yearly premises too, the imports observed a drastic increase with many folds on a monthly basis ever recorded by around 702% Y-o-Y in Apr'20, as against only 31,870 MT of scrap imported in Apr'19. A total of 11 bulk vessels arrived at birth in Apr'20

The USA and Japan supplied five bulk scrap cargo vessels each, carrying 158,014 MT and 65,438 MT respectively in Apr'20, with 62% and 26% of share in total scrap imported by Bangladesh in Apr'20. Bulk imports from USA moved up in particular, rising by 411% M-o-M against only 30,864 MT in Mar'20.

Followed by another prominent supplier- Australia which supplied one vessel, carrying 32,207 MT with 13% share in total scrap imported by Bangladesh.

Next month in May'20 also, the bulk scrap imports are expected to be very high, on account of all time record high bookings by Bangladesh in March'20, provided timely shipments happen.

Coal: Coal imports to Bangladesh observed a sharp fall by 45% M-o-M to 602,868 MT in Apr'20 in contrast with 1,097,949 MT of coal imported in Mar'20. Notably, Indonesia supplied the largest quantity of coal with 12 vessels, carrying a total of 493,738 MT coal. Other prominent suppliers were South Africa and Mozambique exported one vessel each in Apr'20.

It is estimated that coal imports may decrease or suspended in near future due to ahead of monsoon season and low demand from brick industries.

Steel Coils: Bulk imports of steel coils witnessed an increase in Apr'20 as the country imported 119,534 MT, upsurge by 151% M-o-M as against 47,709 MT of coils imported in Mar'20.

Japan supplied the largest quantity of coils with 83% share in total coils imported by Bangladesh, as it exported 98,755 MT in Apr'20. Another prominent supplier was Taiwan, which supplied at 20,779 MT (17% share).

Imports of Pig Iron and HBI to Bangladesh reported nil volume in Apr'20.
