Australia's non-coking coal exports remain stable m-o-m in Jul'24

Australia's non-coking coal shipments were largely stable m-o-m in July 2024 at 16.42 million tonnes (mnt) compared to 16.48 mnt in June. Shipments dropped 12% y-o-y to 16.42 mnt in July against 18.56 mnt in July 2023.

Exports to China rise

Australian thermal coal exports to China rose slightly by 3% m-o-m reaching 5.16 mnt in July, up from 5.10 mnt in June.

In contrast, exports to Japan declined by 12% m-o-m to 5.27 mnt in July from 5.94 mnt in June. Similarly, exports to Taiwan also decreased, reflecting a 9% decline, to 1.93 mnt in July from 2.11 mnt in June.

Meanwhile, exports to South Korea and India fell respectively by 1% and 29% m-o-m in July, with shipments totalling 1.23 mnt and 0.17 mnt.

Exports to Vietnam, however, surged 61% leaping to 1.09 mnt in July from 0.68 mnt in June.

Port-wise export breakup for July

In July, Newcastle's exports dropped 3% m-o-m reaching 11.91 mnt compared with 12.24 mnt in June. Meanwhile, Gladstone saw a notable increase of 14% m-o-m, with shipments totalling 1.46 mnt in July, up from 1.29 mnt in June.

However, Abbot Point experienced a significant surge in exports which rose by 39% m-o-m to 1.83 mnt in July from 1.32 mnt in June. Conversely, DBCT faced a sharp decline, with exports dropping to 0.51 mnt in July compared to 1.18 mnt in June.
