Australia: Coking coal exports remain stable m-o-m in Oct'24

  • Exports surge by nearly 14% y-o-y

  • Shipments to India drop 4% m-o-m

Australia's coking coal shipments stood at 13.29 million tonnes (mnt) in October 2024 compared to 13.38 mnt in September 2024, stable m-o-m, except for a slight 0.7% decline, as per data maintained with BigMint. However, exports surged by 13.9% y-o-y compared to 11.67 mnt in October 2023.

Exports to Japan and South Korea rise, volumes to India dip

In October, shipments to Japan totalled 3.10 mnt, up 2.7% from 3.02 mnt in September. Exports to South Korea also saw a notable rise of 8.6%, from 1.74 mnt in September to 1.89 mnt in October. Conversely, shipments to India declined by 4% to 2.38 mnt from 2.48 mnt in September.

DBCT, Gladstone ports lead growth

Among the load ports, DBCT recorded the highest growth, loading 4.56 mnt in October, up by 8% compared to 4.22 mnt in September. Gladstone Port followed closely, with a slight rise of 2.2%, loading 4.25 mnt in October compared to 4.16 mnt in September.

Port Kembla, Abbot Point see smaller volumes

Port Kembla saw a 37.3% decrease, handling 0.32 mnt in October compared to 0.51 mnt in September. Meanwhile, Abbot Point experienced a 16.1% decline, with October's volumes at 1.35 mnt against 1.61 mnt in the previous month. Hay Point Port saw shipments falling by a smaller 5% to 2.74 mnt in October from 2.88 mnt in September.

Price trends

Australian coking coal prices were stable m-o-m at $203/t FOB Australia. Prices moved up w-o-w on the expectation of another Chinese stimulus package. Meanwhile, Chinese end-users showed limited interest in procuring forward-delivery cargoes on a fixed-price basis.

Additionally, uncertainty persists over whether Chinese mills will implement a second round of domestic coke price cuts this week, given mixed market signals.

Notably, demand from India remained muted because of the Diwali holidays.
