Around 10,000 MT Sponge Iron Stuck at Benapole Border, SIMA Urges to Release them

Since lockdown was announced in India, the borders have been closed by the government to prevent pandemic spread. Following this, the trucks carrying goods got stuck.

Furthermore, it was reported by exporters based in Kolkata that out of total trucks stuck at Benapole border, nearly 5-10% vehicles are packed with sponge iron, which were out for delivery to the Bangladesh based steel mills. Each truck carries about 40-50 MT sponge iron, sources reported. Thus nearly 10,000 MT stock of sponge iron is stuck at borders, shared sources. This has led to payment crises & disturbed the supply chain among buyers-sellers.

Following this, Sponge Iron Manufacturers Association (SIMA) has requested Indian Deptt of Commerce to take immediate action for release of trucks to Bangladesh at Benapole. Prior to this, WBSIMA had requested the Govt of West Bengal to release stuck at the border for quite a long time because of lockdown.

No recent deals of sponge iron export have been reported from India via road (dry port) to Bangladesh due to pending dispatches of previous orders.
