Update: Upcoming Needle Coke Capacities in China

According to the latest survey by IC Carbon, the total production capacity of needle coke in China in 2018 was about 500,000 tonnes. It is estimated that by the end of 2019, the total capacity of Chinese needle coke enterprises in production, construction, expansion and resumption will reach about 1.05 MnT. Below is the progress list of key upcoming needle coke projects in the country:
Shanxi Shouyang 100,000 tonnes coal-tar pitch Needle coke project
Shanxi Shouyang New Energy Co Ltd's 100,000 tonnes coal-tar pitch based needle coke which was built by China Wuye Group is in its civil construction stage. The project is located in 15 MnT recycling industrial park of Qingxu Fine Chemicals in Shanxi Province. The project is being carried out into two phases.
Ningxia Baichun to build 50,000 tonnes of coal-based needle coke plant
In Feb'19, China's Ningxia Baichun New Material announced its plans to invest in 50,000 tonnes coal-based needle coke plant with a total investment of 658 million. The project is expected to be completed in next two years.
Anang Steel's 40,000 tonnes coal-based needle coke project
After more than nine months, the needle-shaped coke project of Anshan Iron and Steel Co. Ltd successfully completed the construction of the main unit of its needle coke plant at the end of March 2019. The Angang Steel needle coke project uses coal tar pitch and its fractions to produce raw materials, further extending the industrial chain of Anshan Steel's chemical products, and is an excellent steel industry for Anshan Steel to enter the field of carbon materials.
Xuyang Xingyu 50,000 tonnes coal-based needle coke project
Pingdingshan Xuyang Xingyu New Material Co., Ltd. 50,000 tonnes of needle coke project, after the complete installation and commissioning of the complete set of equipment was officially released on the afternoon of 4 Jun'19. The quality of raw coke is qualified and stable. At present, it has been approved by customers and entered the normal sales stage.
Weifang Fumei plans to build 80,000 tonnes of oil-based needle coke project
Weifang Fumei New Energy Co., Ltd. plans to produce lithium battery anode materials and needle-shaped coke for ultra-high power electrodes in Xiaying Chemical Park of Weifang City, Shandong province. The project plans to purchase 80,000 tonnes of needle coke combined unit, 300,000 tonnes/year oil slurry and needle coke oil mixed hydrogenation unit. After the project is completed, it can produce 80,000 tonne of needle coke per year. However, the project has not been officially taken off.
Zaozhuang 40,000 tonnes needle coke project
Zaozhuang Zhenxing Carbon Material Technology Co., Ltd. has built a 40,000-tonne coal-based needle coke project using Anshan Thermal Energy Technology. It has entered the feed pre-treatment stage, and the first tower coke is expected to be completed by the end of June.
